The advantages of growing potatoes in grow bags

Growing potatoes in grow bags is a great way to have a small potato crop in a limited space. Here are the steps to follow for a successful harvest:

  • Choose a large container with drainage holes at the bottom. The container should be at least 18 inches deep and 24 inches wide to accommodate the potato plants. Our potato grow bag is ideal for this. To order yours CLICK HERE

  • Fill the container with a high-quality potting mix that is well-draining. Potatoes require a lot of nutrients, so it’s a good idea to mix in some compost or fertilizer into the soil.

  • Plant seed potatoes, which are small potatoes that are used for planting, about 4 inches deep into the soil. Space the seed potatoes about 12 inches apart.

  • Water the soil well to help the seed potatoes sprout. Keep the soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged.

  • As the plants grow, continue to fill the container with soil or potting mix, leaving only the top few inches of the plant exposed. This is known as "hilling" and it helps to keep the developing potatoes covered and protected.

  • Keep the container in a sunny spot, but keep it protected from strong winds. Potatoes need at least six hours of direct sunlight per day.

  • Once the plants have flowered and started to die back, it’s time to harvest the potatoes. Carefully dig through the soil and remove the tubers.

  • Allow the potatoes to dry for a few days before storing them in a cool, dark place.

With proper care, you should be able to harvest between 4-5 pounds of potatoes from a single container. Enjoy your homegrown potatoes!

Growing potatoes in a potato grow bag has several advantages:

Space-saving: Grow bags take up less space than traditional in-ground planting, making them ideal for small gardens, patios, or balconies.

Portability: Grow bags can be easily moved around, which is useful if you need to protect your plants from frost or pests.

Drainage: The porous nature of the grow bag material allows for proper drainage, reducing the risk of waterlogging.

Increased yield: Grow bags can allow for a larger yield of potatoes per square foot compared to in-ground planting.

Ease of harvesting: The potatoes are easier to harvest as they are all in one place and at a depth that makes it easy to reach.

Better control of soil quality: You can use your own soil mix to grow potatoes in grow bags, which allows for better control of soil quality and fertility.
